I went out for a ride with a good friend of mine today; we had a nice run from Wimbourne to Verwood and back again. On the way back we stopped at Knowlton Church, Ben told me he had noticed something on my tyre while riding…
He certainly had noticed *something* alright!
Not knowing much about the technical side of bikes I thought at first that a stone or something had managed to get stuck between the rear mudguard and the wheel itself but after doing a bit of research it seems that the tyres have literally just worn down. I’m glad I found other people online that had experienced the same problem; apparently your tyre can look fine one minute and then you go out on one good run and it can look like mine does now. Despite my obvious lack of knowledge and the fact it seems like a fairly common rookie mistake, I get the feeling I’m still going to feel pretty sheepish explaining this to the mechanics tomorrow.
Looks like I’ve got a bit of work to do before planning this trip, it’s probably best if I at least know how to check the wear on my tyres before setting off on a 3,000 mile trip…
*Embarrassed*

Well, I’ve phoned the garage and the bike is booked in for Thursday, the rear tyre is being changed for a new one, total cost £117.

Brand new tyre is on there now, I swear the mechanic was giving me dirty looks. At least I now know exactly what the tyre should look like, and I’m pretty sure it must’ve been low when I got the bike because I don’t remember it ever looking like the new one does now!
Just as a tip to you all; check pictures online of what your tyres should look like just incase they’re running a bit low without your knowledge, I think you’ll find a fair few bike tyres suffer the same problem as the Pirelli Diablo in that it’s rather difficult to tell if the tyre is actually low in the middle or not.

You got any links at to what a tyre should look like? Have you got a rough route of your trip even if you dont care about finishing?

Here’s a picture of what a Pirelli Diablo should look like, mine wasn’t far off right?!
We have a very rough (as in we needed a rough number of miles) route, but it’s very early stages. We’re going to make a list of the places we want to definitely see and sort of plan a rough route around them. As it stands the rough route is giving me a total mileage of 3,027 miles if you wondered.
