Gary had great fun on his test ride, unfortunately I, on the other hand did not. Picture this if you will, a tiny little Gen (me) on a great big motorbike, barely able to tippy toe the floor and then being told to go and ride it.

I was wary from the get go, I should have just said no and got the dealer to put a lowered seat on the bike, but I didn’t want to be a nuisance and so carried on barely being able to touch the floor. For the more experienced rider this probably would not be a problem but for newbie like me… how do I stop?!

It terrified me to the point where I began thinking that maybe the V-Strom isn’t the bike for me, it was nice while I was moving, felt dependable and strong, but well… how the hell do I stop??!

We’ve read many forum posts and have had many recommendations and most people say to get the same bikes; there’s less spare parts to carry on the road, your machines are both capable of the same things and when it comes to maintenance there’s only one set of instructions to read! I think Gary now has his heart set on a V-Strom, so I thought I would give it another chance.

We went down to the second hand dealer where we had previously seen a black V-Strom that I have been wanting for two weeks now, I sat on it and my feet where almost flat on the ground, just an extra inch – which a moulded seat could give me, and I would be flat! We chatted with the sales guy, found out how much he would give us for Gary’s Monster in part-exchange, he was telling me about the extras that had already been fitted, and the thoughts of my bleak morning disappeared. Just as I was thinking “right, I’m going to buy this” out walks the other salesman and sticks a sold sticker on the bike…

On Saturday, Gen and I went to the Suzuki dealer as planned so that Gen could test ride the V-Strom I tried last week (I’ll let her tell you about her experience in her own post). We had agreed last week with the dealer that I could go out with Gen on another bike, with no obligation at all to buy (not that we were planning on buying new V-Stroms either), my bike of choice? The GSX-R 600, the bike that started it all for me.

The bike is everything I expected it to be; small, light, fast to accelerate and easy to corner, it did everything but disappoint. I think I may have even found a bike that’s more fun than the Monster on the twisties! Just like the V-Strom this bike is very different to my own in the way the gears work, though it’s not too far off the V-Strom itself. The acceleration is in a different league; the 600cc engine manages to provide just enough power to make the bike shift (I’m talking 0-70 before I even realised it) but not too much that I was scared of it (this is after all the first super sports I’ve ever ridden).

I don’t think there’s much point going into details, It’s not like I can give a technical review of the bike with my knowledge but I will say this: There is now no doubt in my mind that I will own one of these machines one day. The GSX-R 600 is probably the smoothest, fastest bike I’ve ridden thus far and it doesn’t exactly lack in the styling department either!

It’s not the bike to travel on; I fear the same wrist/hand (and probably back too) problems as the Monster gives. I’ve made an offer on the white test-ride Strom, honestly, I’d rather not buy new but I do like that white, so I guess this is a happy medium. I could be without a Monster in less than a week!

I decided that on the Monday Bank Holiday just gone (13th April 2009) that after passing my test I wanted to go bike shopping, so off we went to find me a motorbike. Unfortunately the dealers had other things in mind for me as none of them were open. We were driving through Kinson and noticed that Hein Gerike was open, we decided to go in and try on some gear to get a feel for what sort of money I would need to spend. A couple of hours later we left Hein Gerike, my bank account short £800.

So what did I get I hear you asking… I have been recommended lots of different styles of gear by lots of different people, but the answer for me was to be found in the mileage we want to do; it had to be textile. I tried on some different jackets and instantly fell in love with the most expensive one in the shop! In my defense it feels good, looks good (in my opinion) and is gore-tex, which was really the deciding vote when it comes to riding in the heat (I hope) of Spain.

Helmet, again I have been told all sorts of things, but in the end I decided to go for a Nolan – it’s a good name, highly recommended, and being able to flip open the face will no doubt prove useful for anything from paying for petrol to just having a chat.

I have been told I look like an instructor but I don’t really think it’s a problem, infact I think it’s cool!

Gen and I have been out bike hunting this weekend with the intention of finding a suitable bike for Gen and possibly a non-hand killer upgrade for me. After looking online pretty much all week and being bombarded with information it seemed like an impossible task to make a decision on a bike, there are a lot of bikes out there and many of them more than fit the bill. Gen had seen a V-Strom DL650 advertised for sale locally and everywhere we turn people have been recommending the V-Strom (yes Kev, I know you recommended it before I bought the monster) so we went to check it out.

Gen sat on the V-Strom and although she looked tiny on it seemed to be able to handle it fine; it’s actually a lot lighter than it looks and despite the bike being rather tall, she managed to get at least the tips of her toes on the floor each side. We left the dealer thinking we may have found what we’re looking for and had been firmly convinced that buying second-hand was the way to go; no instant-loss showroom tax, cheaper to begin with and we’re both probably less likely to cry if and when (hopefully never) we drop one.

From there we spent the next hour or so visiting various dealers, but nothing else seemed to spark interest. We decided to phone Crescent in Verwood and see if they had a V-Strom I could take out for a test ride. They did, so we booked it in and made our way there.

    V-Strom DL650 Test Ride

I have to say it looks SO much better in white, which unfortunately makes it all that more dissapointing to find out there’s only two of them in the UK. So how was the ride? Overall I would say first impressions are positive, it is of course a very different ride from what I’m used to on the Monster:

    1. The gearing is very different, on the Monster I often get a lot out of each gear and I have to change very little, the V-Strom however needs a little more work, although I suspect this is actually fairly normal as I do remember the Monster feeling very weird when I first got it.
    2. On the Monster I have wind to the face pretty much the entire ride, the V-Strom is very different, that front screen pushes the air off my face, but it does seem to hit the very top of my helmet giving me a rather odd rippling sensation across the top of my head.
    3. It’s big, I felt so tall! I can see over cars, I can see over hedges, and it generally gives a better view, of course the other side to being big you’d think would be the handling but although there was an obvious difference, I never felt like I was having to work, it was easy to move and despite being so huge the turning circle is way better than the Monster which is known for it’s very poor lock.
    4. Last but certainly not least comes the only part I really cared about; comfort and for the half an hour I was riding it, all the boxes can be ticked. My bum was fine, by the end of the ride I felt like I could’ve gone on forever, no problems at all. Most importantly my hands were nowhere near being numb, the riding position is much more upright, and I finally understand the comfortable armchair analogy Kev so often uses when talking about his BMW.

So I guess the question now is are we looking for just one V-Strom for Gen, or are we also looking for a second one for me?!

On 9th April 2009 I passed my full motorbike test, with the final goal being to eventually ride around the world with Gary. It took me two attempts, one injured leg and a few scratches on the poor motorbike, but I did it, and boy did it feel good!

I used to ride a moped a few years back but gave up two wheels after passing my driving test and basking in the warmth that four wheels brings. It wasn’t until about a year ago when Gary got his Monster and wanted me to go on the back that my helmet even saw the light of day again, but I enjoyed it after a few rides (Gary soon learnt he wasn’t allowed to accelerate) and felt like I wanted more. I had always said I would get a big bike after the 50cc but much like everything else, life just got in the way.

So now I have passed, woohoo… now what? Well, the plan is to go bike shopping on Saturday – wish me luck, I hope I find something so this journey can continue!

I can’t remember how long I’ve wanted to ride a motorcycle. I definitely can’t remember how long I’ve wanted to travel. I’ve spent 9,035 of my 9,058 days on British soil, I’ve been to many places, seen many things and met many people, but I want more. I want to see what food people eat in Italy, I want to see what people do day-to-day in Kazakhstan, I want to try communicating with people in spite of an obvious language barrier… I want to see how other people experience life.

I went straight from School to College to University; three months later I was in my first full-time job. There was no gap year for me; I didn’t spend six months in Thailand or a year travelling around Europe. Do I ever wish I had? Not really, I’m actually fairly happy with the way things have turned out, I’m 24 years old, I have a degree and 4 years commercial experience as a web developer, things could be worse. Despite the fact I think I’ve done things right, it hasn’t quenched my thirst for adventure, it doesn’t stop me wanting to see and do all the things I’ve always wanted to do.

In July 2007 I decided it was time to fulfil the first part of the dream and learn to ride a motorcycle, I passed my CBT and bought my first bike a Suzuki GZ125 Marauder. 8 months later in March 2008 I took my full bike test and passed, finally the time had come to get my first “big” bike; a Ducati Monster 695, the bike I’m still riding today.

A lot of people that go on “adventure” trips amuse me, there always seems to be pressure, be it having to stick to a route or having to get to a final destination, it almost becomes a race to get to the next checkpoint, to get to that all important finish line. I don’t want to race to a finish line, I don’t want to be restricted by a route, I want to be free. For me, it’s not about the destination, it’s not even about completing the trip, it’s about the things we do, the people we meet and the places we get to see along the way.

I went out for a ride with a good friend of mine today; we had a nice run from Wimbourne to Verwood and back again. On the way back we stopped at Knowlton Church, Ben told me he had noticed something on my tyre while riding…

    wheel wheel_closeup

He certainly had noticed *something* alright!

Not knowing much about the technical side of bikes I thought at first that a stone or something had managed to get stuck between the rear mudguard and the wheel itself but after doing a bit of research it seems that the tyres have literally just worn down. I’m glad I found other people online that had experienced the same problem; apparently your tyre can look fine one minute and then you go out on one good run and it can look like mine does now. Despite my obvious lack of knowledge and the fact it seems like a fairly common rookie mistake, I get the feeling I’m still going to feel pretty sheepish explaining this to the mechanics tomorrow.

Looks like I’ve got a bit of work to do before planning this trip, it’s probably best if I at least know how to check the wear on my tyres before setting off on a 3,000 mile trip…

    *Embarrassed*
